Most
of us cannot imagine having to call the streets of Seattle home, sleeping
on sidewalks, in doorways, and under bridges. However, the Seattle Police
Department
reports that this is a reality for approximately 800 youth in our city
each night.
These youth, between ages 12 and 21 years of age, are often removed from
their homes,
or fleeing abusive family environments. Circumstances leading to their
homelessness can
frequently be traced to conflict and dysfunction in their upbringing.
Nearly half
of homeless youth are asked to leave home by a parent. They are
children,
with an average age of 14.7, homeless, and high-risk.
Since 1974, YouthCare, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has
been dedicated to serving youth who have nowhere else to turn. Our
mission and purpose is to serve youth, and their families, who are
experiencing alienation, conflict and homelessness. By developing
resiliency, we create opportunities for success.

Childhaven's primary goal is to provide early intervention in
the lives of abused and neglected children ages one month to five years
in order to reduce long-term harmful effects caused by
maltreatment.
Children receive treatment for abuse and neglect. They come to an environment
that
will help them form an emotional attachment to a primary
caregiver,
learn to know and trust adults, develop
interactive skills necessary
to form other secure relationships
and bond to positive social values.

children
can receive clothing, education, counseling and, with the help of
the
Brighter Birthday Club, gifts to celebrate their birthdays and their
