The Brighter
Birthday Club
How it Began
Alison came to a decision
to change her birthday experience at the age of eight. She said, “I want
others to have presents too . . . kids who don’t usually get presents.”
Her original concept was for children to have a brief understanding of a
child in a disadvantaged situation. With the assistance of her mother she contacted “The Better Birthday Club”
on Whidbey Island, Washington. This group collected funds from different individuals,
purchased birthday gifts and distributed them to foster children under the
care of Child Protective Services. “The Better Birthday Club” worked with
Alison to develop her idea. Alison wanted special invitations to go
to each of her guests which explained a bit about who would be receiving
their present and what type of present the foster child would like to
have. She participated in the “Better Birthday Club” for three
years and hoped it would catch on with her friends. Her sister
Andrea supported her efforts as well. The Whidbey Island Better
Birthday Club didn’t have the volunteers to promote the
program. They suggested she take her idea to her home in Seattle and
start her own club. In the year 2000 she changed the name to “The
Brighter Birthday Club” turning her presents over to
children at “YouthCare”.
Now anyone can throw a Brighter Birthday party, not just kids. She has expanded the Club to include
Childhaven, Treehouse, Catholic
Community Services,
Jewish Family Service, and Family
Services!
Alison hopes that you will
join The Brighter
Birthday Club and brighten the
birthday of a forgotten child.
